Should I spend a couple of days on Oahu instead of all the time on the Big Island?

You know da rulz! The Big Island and Oahu are like night and day. You can do anything on Oahu you could do in most big cities….plus the Hawaii kine stuff.

Ms. Puhi actually says it all in her own special way bless her heart. Oahu is a must see; I recommend to friends and family here on the mainland to try to plan their special events on Oahu in order to take advantage of the big city resources and have an interesting backdrop for traveling guests. The Big Island is more of a honeymoon atmosphere; remote, vast, scenic, pristine….while all the significant historical, cultural, educational, etc. sites are located on Oahu. If it’s ocean sports you want any island will suffice. Oahu has UH football, museums, Pearl Harbor, Punchbowl, world class shopping and dining, military resouces (PX, NX, Hale Koa Hotel, Tripler AMC, VA). All the comforts of a major US city along with unique and spectacular culture of the Hawaiian people. Each of the eight major islands is geographically unique and worth visiting their own right.

I think there’s a lot more available on Oahu. I’ve been to both islands, and thought that the volcano and the lava fields were cool to see…… but there’s not alot going on outside of Hilo and Kona. Oahu has so much more to see and do. I would definitely check out Oahu for a few days. Try Roberts Overnighters….. they can arrange the inter-island air, a car, and a hotel room for one package price. I’ve used them several times and they are the best!

I have been to all the islands in Hawaii many times and hey are all different. It depends what you want. Honolulu is great for shopping, but there beach “comes and goes”. Wen I went last year, the Halekulani had two feet by two feet sand beach. If you like the beach spend more time on the big island. The big island also has the volcanos which were also fun. The big island is extremley diverse, rainforest on one half and lava on the other half. Your hotel will be in a small tropical oasis in the midst of lava rock. Oahu, is way more bulit up, but if you like the beach, you alf to drive an hour north to the Kahala hotel, JW marriot or turtle bay resort, but then you are isolated from all the aciton. On Oahu is the U.S Missouri, but you have to wait two hours after you get your ticket to see the memorial, but you can see other hisotric things as you wait. It just depnds wha you watn and what type of person you are becasue you are trading large city for beach or beach for large city, shopping, and aciton action! I think you sohuld spend five days on the big sland and 2-3 on Oahu. I think everyone sohuld see all the Hawaiian Islands becasue they are all so different.

I had a great time on Oahu, and there is a lot to do there!

My favorites were hiking Diamond Head, driving all the way around the island with stops at Pearl Harbor, The Valley of Temples and the Dole Plantation.

Waikiki is great fun, as is watching the surfers on the North Shore.

I highly recommend splitting your vaction up and really getting a good taste of the islands!

Oahu does have some fun things to do, climbing Diamond Head comes to mind, maybe visit Pearl Harbor memorial if into that type thing…maybe even if not. I am not big (or small!) memorial guy, but was moved by that one.
One thing I definitely recommend doing if you can is to visit the leper colony on Molakai. Sounds strange yes, but it is fascinating. I say leper colony as it is a restriced area, and is still inhabited and accessable only by those who were once confined there. You cannot go there without thier permission. But the ‘lepers’, now cured of course, offer a fascinating tour. I also highy recommend taking the mule ride option down into the colony, spectacular views on the way down and taking the steep zigzag trail on a mule is really an experience!

Oahu is a great island!! Like you said, why stay all time on one island????
Been to Oahu six times, and each time there is something new to see, and do!!

Yeah. Big island is still forming. So there’s not much to do. In Oahu, there’s way more to do.

IMHO, Honolulu is like Los Angeles with a beach.

If you go to Oahu, travel THROUGH Honolulu and head for the North Shore.
